Home Heat Pump Installation FAQs

  • Q: How much will my electric bill go up with a heat pump?
  • While cold temperatures and increased electricity prices are driving higher electric bills for heat pump users, rising fuel costs are also driving higher heating bills for oil and propane users. Using prices from the Governor’s Energy Office, our Cost of Heating Calculator shows that heat pumps still save $913/year compared to oil and $2,128/year compared to propane. So while a significant increase to your electric bill would be expected, this is easily offset (and more) by the recognized savings on your propane bill and eliminating the need for multiple air conditioning units in the summer.
  • Q: Can I turn off my heat pump and compressor in colder temperatures to save money?
  • Our professional recommendation us to always leave your system on. Our modeling shows that heat pumps cost less to run than oil at any temperature above negative 1F, and less than propane at any temperature above negative 11F. Even if a customer did switch to oil or propane precisely at these temperatures, failure to switch back exactly when temperatures recover runs the risk of increasing costs. This is why we recommend using your heat pump all winter.
  • Q: What size system do I need?
  • The size of your heat pump system is directly informed by your energy needs and the structure that it is servicing. Depending on the layout of the home or office and how much of your heating/cooling that you are looking to offset, we can quote a variety of system sizes and installation options that help you optimize your energy usage and get the most bang for your buck.
